About GMCH, Guwahati
Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon of the East India Company, was the pioneer to start Health Education and health care in Assam. He established a medical school known as ‘Berry White Medical School’ at Dibrugarh, Assam in 1898-99. In course of time this medical school was upgraded and on 3rd Nov., 1947 the Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established and it stands as the first medical college in Assam.
With increasing demands for health care and health education, the need for more medical colleges in Assam was keenly felt. The State Government in 1959 headed by Mr. B.P. Chaliha, the then Chief Minister of Assam, Mr. Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed, the then Finance Minister, and Mr. Rupram Brahma as the then Medical Minister of Assam decided to have a second medical college in Assam. On 7th Nov., 1959 the State Government set up an expert committee to go into the matter and submit their report
Accordingly The glorious journey of Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati started on, 20th September, 1960 at Jalukbari till date to this permanent campus of Narakasur foothills, Bhangagarh, via Panbazar,Guwahati, Assam. This present complex of Gauhati Medical College was inaugurated in 1968 by Mr. B. K. Nehru, the then Governor of Assam and the Hospital was shifted during 1980 and other parts of the hospital by 1984. During this course of development of Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, State Cancer Institute was also officially inaugurated on 17th February, 2017 and now its fully functional with latest technology like linear accelerator, PET-MRI and other equipment’s. Super specialty Hospital across the road is also fully functional with all the sophisticated machines and equipment’s from 1st January 2021. Dhiren Para FRU Hospital, Pandu FRU are being added as annex hospital of GMCH from 1st January 2022 and the newest addition is the Cardio Neuro Centre having 300 beds with 4 departments namely Cardiology, Cardiothoracic, Neurology and Neurosurgery. At present GMC&H have 33 Nos of departments including 12 no of Super specialty departments. The Mother & Child Care Hospital of GMC&H is upcoming. The Journey of admission in GMCH was started with 100 MBBS students and 1st batch was recognized during March, 1966. The Post Graduate courses in various departments started during 1969 and DM/Mch Course started in 2008-09. With passing days and due to better facilities in Gauhati Medical College, at present we are having 200 Under Graduates and 210 Post Graduates and 37 DM/Mch students every year.
GMC&H has been a standing witness to this illustrous journey of medical sciences in the State. During its more than 60 years of existence, this mega institution has produced a large number of doctors, specialists, super specialists, nurses and paramedical staff who have worked or working in different parts of the country and abroad. The strong academic and practical foundations built during their study in this institution have enabled them to be the pillars of health care services not only in the country but also in different parts of the world.
>Responding to the need of the area, over a period of time, the hospital grew into a 3214 beds and 600 beds of ICU and multi-disciplinary, super-specialty medical institute along with the other ancillary facilities.
The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. Gauhati Medical College Hospital conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses both at undergraduate and post graduate levels. Teaching and research are conducted in 35 disciplines. In the field of medical research, Gauhati Medical College takes the lead in Assam, having a large number of research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. We are also associated with a College of Nursing and train students in B.Sc and M.Sc Degrees.
